Setting up an internet radio station can be fun, but getting all the necessary equipment can be expensive. A microphone is one of the most important things you need to get started. But with so many different microphones, how do you choose? There are many factors to consider when purchasing a budget mic, such as sound quality, portability, and durability.  We will review these factors in this blog post and help you find the best budget mic for your needs.

What Type of Microphone is Best For Online Radio?

Microphones have been a staple in radio stations and studios for decades, but with the development of digital technology, they’re now available in a seemingly-endless variety of shapes and sizes.

There are three main types of microphones used in radio production:

  • Dynamic: A common type of microphone that uses a magnet and moving coil to produce sound; the diaphragm is usually made of aluminum or another low-mass material.
  • Condenser: Also called capacitor microphones, these function with two metal plates in proximity that create a higher capacitance as they get closer. The change in distance from the metal back plate to the diaphragm creates an electrical signal.
  • Ribbon: Also known as velocity microphones, this is a variation of a dynamic microphone. An electrically-conductive ribbon moves within a magnetic field and sound waves interact with the metal ribbon and create a voltage.

Dynamic and condenser microphones are standard in radio. Dynamic mics are rugged and can handle high sound levels without distortion; essentially, they are suitable for live applications. Especially if you will also use video recording software, you should have a good quality microphone. Condenser microphones are also popular for radio and voice recording, as they can provide a natural, crisp, accurate sound due to their higher sensitivity. Ribbon microphones are less common but still used in some recording studios for capturing vocals and instruments.

How Much Does a Decent Mic for Online Radio Cost?

When it comes to budget microphones, you don’t need to spend a fortune. Many budget mics are available for $200 or less, giving you an excellent sound range, no matter your needs. So, if you’re looking to start an online radio station, here are some of the best budget microphones out there.

Blue Microphones

Blue is a popular budget mic brand for online radio and offers excellent sound quality and durability. Blue has made a name for itself in the budget mic market, and the Yeti is one of its most popular models. Content creators can use them for podcasting, voice-overs, and even gaming. Its patented plug-and-play design makes a versatile mic for any computer, whether a Mac, PC or tablet. The included swivel mount and tripod stand let you position the mic for podcasting, live streaming, and field recordings. It’s also easy to remove from its mount and tripod for portability, making this mic a winning choice for online radio use.

Which Mic is Best For Live Streaming?

To sound great, you want the best online radio equipment for your live streaming setup, and in our view, the best mic to do that is the Blue Yeti. The mid-range microphone has high-value features like adjustable pickup patterns and the Blue VO!CE software. This microphone also features studio controls for headphones for convenience and an instant mute function if you need it.

What is a Good Starter Mic For Live Streaming?

Live streaming is a great way to connect with your audience and build a community around your content. Because of this, you want to ensure that your audio quality is the best it can be, but ideally without spending a fortune.

With its heavy-duty suspension mount and windscreen, the Behringer B1 Bundle can filter out the noise you don’t want, leaving only clear audio. This budget mic also comes with a carrying case for ultimate portability, so you can take it wherever you need to work.

One of the first challenges newcomers to online radio broadcasting face is finding songs to fill out the music programing on their station. Most people start by looking for free music for online radio. And you’ll probably even find search results for royalty-free music. But don’t be fooled. Broadcasting music through online radio is very different from listening to music online. You can’t just go to YouTube or Spotify and play your favourite tracks on your Airtime Pro station.

Why not? The short answer is: Music licensing.

What you need to know about music licensing for your online radio – different options

We won’t go into the full explanation of music royalties and licensing rules here, but the key point to remember is that radio stations must pay a fee to broadcast music. (If you have an Airtime Pro or other internet radio station, this means you.) How much you pay and which licensing agency you need to buy a licence from depends on several factors, including:

  • The country where you live
  • The countries you are broadcasting to
  • The kind of music you want to play
  • Whether your online station accepts advertising

Even songs licensed under Creative Commons agreements have specific conditions for use. While songs licensed as CC0 or CC-BY could be considered broadly safe to use, it is best to check with the artist or consult a lawyer before you start playing them on your station.

But don’t despair. There is great music out there waiting to be found. A number of sites offer subscriptions and other kinds of packages that let you broadcast emerging independent artists for an all-in fee that won’t break the bank. We’ve listed some of the top choices below.

Find a licensing package that fits your internet radio station

Bandcamp: Has been around since 2008 and claims to be home to more than 12,000 unsigned bands in all genres. Artists can sell their music here, and even merchandise such as t-shirts and vinyl. Bandcamp’s payouts are favourable to artists. They take 15% of sales (compared to the usual 30% on a service such as iTunes) and a 10% cut on merchandise. The music you buy from Bandcamp artists is subject to a number of use restrictions; see a sample scenario here.

Jamendo: A Luxembourg-based community of music published under Creative Commons licences. It boasts 4 million members and more than 40,000 artists on its platform. You can buy individual licences or subscriptions from Jamendo itself.

Soundcloud: A go-to place for independent bands. It’s easy to find and follow new musicians here, and the site’s recommendation algorithm is a real strong point, guaranteeing that you’ll be notified about emerging acts with just the kind of sounds you’re looking for. Note that you can use Soundcloud to search for “cc0”, “creative commons”, “free music”, “copyright free” etc, but even then each track will have its own copyright info, and many of them won’t be totally free.

Hype Machine: To keep abreast of emerging trends and read the latest reviews of indie bands, Brooklyn-based Hype Machine should be one of your first stops. It impressively aggregates content from hundreds of music sites and independent blogs.. Unlike other music sites, their offering also includes other creative assets, from stock photos to web templates. Their price list is here.

Tribe of Noise hosts more than 34,000 composers, singer songwriters, producers and performing artists from 194 countries. They recently acquired famed New Jersey radio station WFMU’s Free Music Archive, an online repository of music with more than 100,000 recordings. But free music in this case is more like free speech than free beer. ToN is focused on compensating artists for their work; here is an overview of the licences they offer. Finally, don’t discount older sites like Tumblr and Myspace. Both were once popular social networks, and are still lively places where independent bands maintain pages and bloggers write about their latest music discoveries.

So, you have your Airtime Pro station already set up and you want to place it on your website, right? Easy. Airtime Pro’s Radio Player is a flexible widget that in a few easy steps can be embedded with just one line of HTML code so that your online radio station can be seen and listened to by anyone, anywhere on the internet.

To get started promoting your station in this way, go to Widgets in your Airtime Pro dashboard and select Player

Here, you have two choices. The Simple Radio Player displays the track or show your station is currently playing as well as the upcoming track, and there is the option to display icons for Twitter and Facebook, which lets listeners share your station with their social media followers.

Select your Airtime Pro Radio Player

Cover Art is a responsive version of the Radio Player that will additionally display each song’s full-colour cover art as they play out, automatically based on the track’s metadata. When listeners click play on this version, the cover art will spin in an eye-catching way.

Animated responsive player widget

Select the version you prefer.

Below that, there are additional options to customise your player:

  • In the Title section, type in your station’s name or tagline, and it will appear in the upper left corner of the player.
  • Select “Auto detect the most appropriate stream to use” to give listeners on mobile devices the option to save data by using a lower quality “mobile stream”.
  • Display or remove Facebook and Twitter icons that listeners can click to share your programming with their own social media followers.
  • Include an icon for the embed code so that anyone can grab it and place your station’s Radio Player on any website they want.

On the bottom of your Player page (see below), you will find your unique embed code, which you will copy and paste into your target website’s HTML.

Airtime Pro Radio Player embed code

You can add any text you want just before the code to introduce it, such as “Listen to My Cool New Online Radio Station”. Disclaimer*: A few website builder template services don’t allow iFrames at all or require additional plug-ins to work. If you run into any problems, consult with your service to see if it accepts iFrames and has a workaround. Also, keep in mind, iFrames can only display content from sites that use the same Hypertext Transfer Protocol you use. If your site uses HTTPS, you will only be able to embed content from other HTTPS sites. Likewise, if you use HTTP, you can only embed HTTP URLs.

Voila…it’s that easy! As long as this Radio Player iFrame code is embedded in your target website(s), all of the information and audio from your station will be transmitted there in real time. Place it prominently on your station’s homepage, blog or social media and encourage fans to share it on theirs.

Interviewing a guest? Broadcasting a concert? Covering a sports event? Anytime you want to broadcast live on your Airtime Pro station, you’ll be able to do it with just one click, thanks to our seamless new integration with Rocket Broadcaster.

What is Rocket Broadcaster? It’s an application – a streaming audio encoder – that takes sound from your computer and either sends it to a server (usually for a streaming service such as Icecast or SHOUTcast) or sends it to another application: in our case Airtime Pro.

The third-party app (currently for the Windows operating system only) is now fully integrated into Airtime Pro, so first-time users will no longer need to go through the cumbersome task of manually configuring the live broadcasting software to connect to their stream.

In fact, we have built in a shortcut to Rocket Broadcaster right in to the Airtime Pro interface. So any time you want to go live on your station-you can now open the Rocket app with a single click.

Ready to dive in?

To get started, we’ve added a new “Set up Live source” button on the top right corner of the Airtime Pro interface.

Click this button, and you will be taken to the help menu (pictured below) and prompted to choose your live broadcasting software of choice. Select the “Live broadcast with Rocket Broadcaster” link and you will be guided through the download process.

The first time you go through the setup process, you will need to download the Rocket application by clicking “No, I don’t have it, I need to install it.” Then you can go back to Airtime Pro and click “Start Rocket.” Then it will be automatically configured for your stream.

What if I’m not on Windows?

If you are using an operating system other than Windows, you will find detailed instructions on this help menu for downloading, configuring and using other live broadcasting software (BUTT, Nicecast (Mac only), SAM Broadcaster and Mixxx) by clicking “I have broadcasting software.”  A detailed guide for downloading and using Rocket Broadcaster is also available in our help center.

Developing a lively on-air personality is one of the best ways to make your radio show stand out from the competition. With this integration, we’ve made it as easy as possible to broadcast live on the air. Happy DJing, Airtimers!

Podcasting has been on a meteoric streak the past few years with an estimated 700,000 podcasts in production and some 2,000 to 3,000 new shows launching each month. Advertisers have taken notice, spending close to $500 million on podcast ads in the U.S. alone in 2018, up more than 50% from the year before, and projections are that figure will top $1 billion by 2021. We made podcasting with Our Airtime Pro internet software easy, so you can take advantage of this growing trend.

Everyone seems to want a piece of that action, including tech giants Apple, Google and Spotify, and established radio companies like iHeartMedia and Entercom Communications, which are now heavily investing in podcasters and eagerly positioning themselves to capture more of your ear time. Google has recently introduced full-text podcast searches in its results, as has Apple in its Podcast app, so finding these shows is easier than ever.

Podcast and broadcast in one with Airtime Pro

With all that momentum, there’s never been a better time to jump into the podosphere. Fortunately, starting an internet radio station and creating shows with our Airtime Pro online radio platform is a cinch. In fact, Airtime Pro offers a built-in podcast feed as well as podcast hosting.

Airtime Pro: Podcast page
Podcast page

To start podcasting in our Airtime Pro, simply go to the My Podcast page in your station’s Airtime Pro interface and enter the show’s title, metadata and schedule. “How to publish a podcast with Airtime Pro” will guide you through all the details. After uploading a full-length radio show to your station, you can easily publish it to your podcast feed and SoundCloud in only two clicks.

Get more listeners

To get your show into iTunes, Spotify or another podcast distribution platform, all you have to do is submit your RSS podcast feed URL to the iTunes Store.

In the same way, you can also import a public iTunes RSS feed into your Airtime Pro station and schedule those podcasts for play. And did you know you can also exchange radio programs between stations using our podcasting feature? Here’s how.

For a full overview of broadcasting your own and others’ podcasts, read more here.

Of course, setting up your podcast and distributing it is the easy part. Creating compelling shows that will attract a growing audience and bring additional revenue to your station is far trickier. As with any radio show, niche topics tend to do well, attracting the passionate listeners that advertisers covet. Any regular show that you already broadcast can be expanded and turned into a full-blown, entertaining podcast. For instance, if you do a weekly hour on say the best of New Orleans jazz, that could be an ideal candidate.

Rather than just playing tracks, however, the most successful podcasts take full advantage of voice narrative. Whether it’s a weekly show on music, politics, or local culture, it’s essential that you liven up your podcasts with information your intended audience can’t find elsewhere and will keep returning for. Historical background, anecdotes and interviews with subjects or experts: this is where you can truly distinguish your podcast from the rest of the pack.

Also, keep in mind, podcasting is a flexible format with a lot of momentum and room for experimentation. Scripted podcasts, both fiction and non-fiction, have been much in the news lately, with film and TV production companies increasingly optioning them for the full Hollywood treatment. So no matter how unusual your concept might be, podcasting is a great way to flesh it out and introduce it to the world. And, who knows, your idea could become the next hot property.

Holiday present for you, Airtimers: Radio Page 2.0!

The Airtime Pro team is proud to announce the brand new Radio Page, set to go live on December 12. All current trial and paid stations will be upgraded automatically.

The new specs have been designed to meet Airtime Pro users’ needs, especially when it comes to making your programming more social, shareable and fun to use. This design and functionality release is part of a bigger project to add more features to Radio Page.

Let’s see what’s new!

Schedule page

Schedule page

  • We moved the station description to the Home page (Start) so that everyone can see what your station is about right away…
  • Which is why Schedule Overview has moved to the “second” page.
  • You can now customize your background image.
  • Station admins can also try different Color Schemes for their Radio Page.

  • The navigation menu has moved from bottom to the left-hand side.

Podcast Page

  • We added Social Media Links (under the logo). Station admins can customize links.
  • You can help first-time listeners understand what your station is all about by adding Station Tags (category/genre).
  • Show Information is a new feature where you can say more about  your ongoing/scheduled shows.
  • We gave the Playout toolbar at the bottom of the page a makeover so it looks crisp and clean.

Share track

  • We added Automated Track Artwork display.
  • Desktop users will appreciate the new Volume bar.
  • The Share Track button lets your listeners share Now Playing tracks via Twitter, Facebook, Google +, or their email accounts.  Along with the Social Media Links in the top left corner, this new feature will get the word out about your station!
  • The Embed Button takes sharing one step further. Listeners can embed your player widget on their own, wherever they want.

Auto-tweeting formats

Using powerful template tags, you are able to customize exactly what you’d like to tell your listeners. The automatic show notifications option allows stations to let their fans know exactly when to tune in to listen to their favorite programming. Automatic track tweets let listeners know what’s playing and gives them a great idea of what type of content the current show features.

We’ve also added the ability to manually tweet from the Airtime Pro dashboard. This lets your DJs interact with their listeners, announce contests, or tweet links to cute cat gifs. What are you waiting for? Get started tweeting!

A big part of running a great radio station is knowing your listeners. To help you with that, we’re pleased to unveil a revamped listener statistics page for Airtime Pro that shows where your listeners are, how long they’re listening for, and what they’re listening to.

Session duration distribution - Bins and displays how long your audience listens for

We’ve split the Listener Statistics page up into several different reports, including:

  • A “Geolocation” report showing a map of your listeners and top countries or cities
  • A “Most Popular Shows” report, showing your most listened to shows
  • “Aggregate Listener Hours” (or aggregate tuning hours), which charts the sum of all listening sessions each day
  • A “Listening Session Durations” report, which shows how long you’re keeping your audience for

With these new analytics, you’ll be able to glean new insights about your listeners and better tailor your Airtime Pro radio station to your audience.

Lastly, we’d love to hear your feedback on these new reports. Are there any other metrics or filters you’d like to see? Leave a comment below or send us an email!

We want you to get the most out of your radio station, that’s why we just created two brand new features for Airtime Pro. If you aren’t already an Airtime user, take a minute to sign up for a free trial. Within your station, you will notice that there are a couple changes. Read on to find out more.

Built-in podcast feed for Airtime Pro

As many of you know, podcasts have seen a significant resurgence in popularity ever since the release of NPR’s Serial podcast. Podcasts are radio programs available for download on-demand over the internet and are the best way to reach any listeners who’ve missed your radio broadcast. That’s why podcasts are a logical extension of our internet radio broadcasting software, Airtime Pro. We recently decided to create a few brand new and exciting features for Airtime Pro that will help broadcasters take advantage of this explosion in podcast popularity. So without further ado, welcome to the new built-in podcast feed for Airtime Pro.

My Podcast

To help you better reach your listeners, Airtime Pro now gives you a built-in podcast feed for your radio station. After uploading a full-length radio show to your station, you can easily publish it to your podcast feed and SoundCloud in only two clicks. The best part? Your podcast feed can be browsed, played, and subscribed to right from your Radio Page today. Just click the new Podcast icon on your Radio Page to check it out!

Podcast ingest

Airtime Pro can now subscribe to your favorite podcast feeds and automatically download new episodes into your track library, bringing the best radio content from the web directly to your station. This powerful feature can save you time by aggregating and importing tracks for you.

Station-to-station sharing

Now that Airtime Pro can import and publish podcast episodes, you can easily share radio programs with your partner stations by publishing them to your podcast. If you’d prefer to share only with other stations and not your listeners, you can do that by toggling your Podcast Visibility to Private and sharing the secret link only with those stations.

Facebook widget

How strong is your social media game? Whether you have an established presence on Facebook or are just getting started, adding the new Facebook player widget will take your page to the next level.

This new widget allows you to add your radio station to your Facebook page. The widget appears as a “Radio Player” tab on your Facebook page and lets your fans listen to your radio station and podcast right from your page. The new Facebook widget can be found inside your Airtime Pro station by clicking Widgets on the left, then Facebook.
